Cyclones Earn Split With No. 10 Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Iowa State earned a split with No. 10 Missouri Wednesday afternoon in Big 12 softball action at University Field.

The Cyclones (22-26, 4-10 Big 12) dropped the first game, 5-0, before winning the second game, 4-3, against the Big 12 leading Tigers (41-6, 11-3).

Rachel Zabriskie (15-21) bounced back after a tough first game to allow just three hits in the second game, which ended the Tiger's 10-game winning streak. Zabriskie retired 19-straight batters after giving up a run in the first. She allowed just a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning before retiring the final batter to pick up the win.

Iowa State scored two runs on three hits in the first inning of game two, which was highlighted by Amanda Bradberry's run-scoring single.

After the Tigers closed the gap to 2-1, Alex Johnson blasted a two-run homer to left field in the third to make it 4-1. The homer was Johnson's sixth of the season.

It was all Zabriskie after that as the sophomore hurler struck out seven in the game and held Missouri without a base runner for five-straight innings.

Missouri did make things interesting in the seventh as a two-out error extended the inning and Lindsey Ubrun blasted a homer to cut the lead to 4-3. Zabriskie got pinch hitter Ashley Fleming to line out to shortstop to end the game and give the Cyclones a Big 12 split for the third series in a row.

Johnson led the Cyclones in the back end of the doubleheader, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

In the first game, Missouri jumped on the board with a pair of runs and never looked back on its way to a 5-0 win. Andee Allen had a run-scoring double and Rhea Taylor came home on a double steal to highlight the scoring.

Ubrun hit her 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning and Mizzou tacked on another run in the sixth to cap the 5-0 MU victory.

Stacy Delaney (13-2) tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out seven, to get the win in the opener.

Iowa State returns to action this weekend for a pair of games at Texas A&M. First pitch for Saturday's game is slated for 1 p.m.
