Cyclones Fall To No. 25 Texas, 5-1

AUSTIN, Texas ? For the second-straight game Iowa State out hit No. 25 Texas but the hits didn't amount to runs as the Cyclones fell to the Longhorns, 5-1, Sunday afternoon in Big 12 softball action.

The Cyclones (19-20. 1-5 Big 12) had eight hits to just six for the Longhorns (31-11, 7-1) but UT was able to convert its hits to runs. The Longhorns had a double and homer in the game while each of ISU's eight hits went for singles.

Texas got the scoring started in the second inning as starting pitcher Brittany Barnhill helped her own cause with a single to centerfield that scored Courtney Craig. Craig reached earlier in the inning with a single.

ISU knotted things up in the top of the third as Courtney Wray knocked in Kelsey Kidwell with a single.

That was all the scoring the Cyclones would do as Barnhill controlled the rest of the game from the circle.

Texas put four runs on the board in the fourth, highlighted by a leadoff solo homer by Craig and a three-run double from Desiree Williams.

Bianca Lopez had a leadoff single for the Cyclones in the fifth but only advanced to second base.

In the seventh inning, Kelsey Kidwell singled with two outs and Heidi Kidwell followed with an infield hit. The duo advanced to second and third because of a throwing error on the Longhorns, but Barnhill was able to get Wray to ground out, ending the game.

Wray and Kelsey Kidwell finished with two hits each to lead the Cyclones.

Rachel Zabriskie (12-15) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing five runs on five hits. Freshman Lauren Kennewell saw her first action of the season after returning from injury. Kennewell tossed a scoreless bottom of the sixth for the Cyclones.

Barnhill (19-6) got the win for Texas, giving up just one run on eight Cyclone hits.

Iowa State will be back in action Tuesday at Iowa. The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
