AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team utilized two second-half goals Sunday at the ISU Soccer complex to run past Montana, 2-0.
After a scoreless first half Iowa State, (1-0-2) stepped up the offensive pressure and was quickly rewarded when freshman Jordan Wagner scored 1:09 into the second half. Fellow freshman Amanda Woelfel assisted Wagner by crossing the ball from the left side into the center of the penalty area. Wagner controlled the ball well and slotted it past Montana (0-3-0) goalkeeper Grace Harris.
The Cyclones put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute when senior Casey Bothwell flicked a cross from junior Jordan Bishop off the inside of the near post and across the goal line.
Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger feels the win will benefit the Cyclones in multiple ways after ISU drew in its first two matches.
“It's important to get a win,” Dillinger said. “It does a lot for our confidence and energy.”
With the shutout, Iowa State has conceded only one goal in three matches, two of which went to overtime. By keeping a clean sheet and recording a win, ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason now stands alone atop the all-time career wins (20) leaderboard in Iowa State history.
Dillinger said, in addition to Gleason, the Cyclone defense is doing its job.
“Mary Kate McLaughlin is doing phenomenal,” Dillinger said. “She is a great leader and wins everything in the air. We moved Lauren Fader into the midfield and she is doing a great job of stopping the other team from penetrating through the midfield.”
ISU outshot Montana 12-10 and held an 8-5 shots-on-goal advantage in the match. The Grizzlies had six corner kicks to the Cyclones' five.
Iowa State had a majority of the possession in the first half. The Cyclones held a 5-2 corner kick advantage, with two shots on goal to Montana's one. The two squads were level on shots at four.
The Cyclones' best opportunity of the opening half came 3:56 into the match when Bishop headed a cross on goal, forcing Harris to make a quick reaction save.
Iowa State returns Friday for a 7 p.m. match against DePaul at the ISU Soccer Complex.
