AMES, Iowa?A season-high-tying scoring output from the Iowa State soccer team fell one goal short, as the Cyclones lost 4-3 Friday evening to Oklahoma at the ISU Soccer Complex in Big 12 Conference action.
Iowa State (6-4-2/1-1 Big 12) continually battled back against an offensive-minded Oklahoma (6-4-1/2-1 Big 12) squad throughout the night.
The Sooners started the scoring 5:27 and doubled their lead at the 20:24 mark.
“We have to come out of the gate better,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “Our defense had a lack of communication early on in which caused some organizational breakdowns. I am proud of our team though, because we showed a lot of character to fight, battle and never give up.”
After falling behind 2-0, the Cyclones cut the Sooner lead in half when Brittany Morgan drove in a shot from outside the penalty area with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half. The goal was Morgan's third of the season.
However, the Sooners regained their two-goal lead just 1:30 after Morgan's tally and sent the game to 3-1 at halftime.
Iowa State came flying out of the gates after the break when Jennifer Dominguez netted her first goal of the season at the 54:24 mark off an assist from Jordan Bishop. Oklahoma, again, countered quickly with a goal 35 seconds later to make the score 4-2. Morgan scored her second goal of the match in the 61st minute, as the Cyclones pulled within one goal off another long-range effort from the Mesquite, Texas, native.
“Brittany and (Jennifer Dominguez) really stepped up big time tonight,” Dillinger said. “You could feel that they really wanted to win.”
The Cyclones had a 16-14 shots edge on the match, while the Sooners fired eight shots on goal to Iowa State's six. Morgan had a game-high six shots. Iowa State also won the corner-kick battle, 7-3.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes and made four saves.
Iowa State travels to Stillwater, Okla., to face No. 8 Oklahoma State Sunday at noon.
