BOULDER, Colo.?An early 1-0 lead by the Iowa State soccer team was overcome by Colorado, as the Buffaloes defeated the Cyclones 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field in Big 12 Conference play.
Iowa State (6-7-2/1-4 Big 12) opened the scoring at the 23:03 mark when freshman Jessica Stewart tallied her second goal of the campaign. However, depth quickly became an issue for the Cyclones as Stewart and starter
Emily Hejlik were forced off due to injuries. Additionally, regular starting defender
Caitlin Graboski was serving a one-match suspension after receiving a red card in Friday's match at Nebraska.
“We were playing real well at the beginning of the game and Jessie Stewart scored a good goal,” Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said. “We had some players get hurt, and it went downhill after that because injuries started to mount. We were not able overcome them.”
Colorado (6-7-1/2-3-1 Big 12) made the Cyclones' lead vanish in the 31st minute when Shaye Marshall scored off an assist from Kate Russell. The score would remain at 1-1 at halftime.
The Buffaloes were the more offensive-minded squad in the second half, registering 16 shots to Iowa State's six and were rewarded with a goal at the 79:31 mark from Russell. The tally gave Colorado a 2-1 lead. With just under three minutes to play, Kym Lowry doubled the Buffaloes' lead with a goal at the 87:03 mark.
“The second goal was very deflating,” Dillinger said. “We started pushing numbers forward and we didn't do a good job of stopping their counter attack off a corner kick.”
Colorado outshot Iowa State 22-10 and also held an 8-5 corner-kick edge.
Cyclone goalkeeper
Maddie Jobe played all 90 minutes and recorded eight saves.
“
Maddie Jobe played a good game and it was probably her most complete game of the year,” Dillinger said.
The Cyclones play their next match in Ames when 10th-ranked Texas A&M visits the ISU Soccer Complex Friday for a 6:30 p.m. tilt.
