LUBBOCK, Texas—A hat trick from Texas Tech's Jessica Fuston led to the Iowa State soccer team dropping its third consecutive match by one goal, this time 3-2 in overtime at the John Walker Soccer Complex Friday evening. The Cyclones battled back from behind on two occasions during the match to send the Big 12 Conference tilt to overtime.
Iowa State (6-10-2/1-7 Big 12) held an advantage in nearly every statistical category for the match. The Cyclones outshot Texas Tech (11-5-1/4-3-1 Big 12) by a mark of 16-11, and they held a 6-2 corner-kick advantage.
“Both teams played hard, and it was a good game,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We had chances to win it and didn't, but I was happy with how hard we played tonight. We made some mistakes in the back and those cost us."
The Red Raiders started the scoring with an early goal at the 7:09 mark off the foot of Fuston. The Cyclones responded with a Caitlin Graboski goal in the 38th minute for the freshman's second tally of the year.
“Caitlin scored a bomb,” Dillinger said. “She took a great touch and put it over their keeper's head.”
The score remained level at 1-1 at halftime.
Similar to the first half, Texas Tech scored an early goal in the second frame with a tally at the 50:12 mark.
The Cyclones again fought back to level the match at the 61:05 mark when freshman Theresa Kucera notched her third goal of the season. Kucera scored for the second straight match and both goals were game-tying tallies.
Fuston capped off her impressive night with a goal 6:24 into overtime. All of Texas Tech's goals were scored in the first 7:09 of each period.
“Fuston was in the right spot each time and put away her chances,” Dillinger said.
Iowa State dropped to 0-2-2 in overtime matches this season.
The Cyclones travel to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor Sunday at 1 p.m. in their next contest.
