AMES, Iowa—The Iowa State soccer team closed out its 2010 campaign and sent off graduating seniors Jordan Bishop and Ashley Costanzo in record-breaking fashion with a 5-0 win over defending Big 12 Conference champions Missouri at the ISU Soccer Complex Friday evening.
Iowa State's five-goal margin of victory was the largest in a conference win in program history. The Cyclones registered 19 points on the night (five goals and nine assists) and all were credited to freshmen. Emily Goldstein also added to the historic night, producing a career-best five points on one goal and three assists. Goldstein's night propelled her to 17 points on the season which ties her for the most by a Cyclone true freshman since Kristina Bauman during the 2002 campaign. Iowa State (8-10-2/3-7 Big 12) closed out its season with only freshman scoring during Big 12 play.
“We've been working all week on how we wanted to attack out of our formation tonight to get in a position to have three strikers against their three defenders,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “They did everything we asked them to do.”
Dillinger was also pleased with how her large freshman contingent played this season.
“Our freshmen have been incredible as a group,” Dillinger said. “We put a lot of pressure on them from the beginning and most of them have really stepped up and got a lot of valuable experience this year.”
While Dillinger was pleased with how well her freshmen played, she was most satisfied with Bishop and Costanzo closing their careers on a high note.
“I'm happy that we were able to send Jordan and Ashley out with such a memorable moment tonight,” Dillinger said. “They both have been great leaders for our program. We asked Jordan to make a huge change by moving from the midfield to defense, and she did an incredible job. She showed she is a top player by being able to make that transition.”
The Cyclones came out of the gates firing, as Caitlin Graboski drilled a long-range effort from 22 yards out at the 3:12 mark into the top of the Missouri (7-9-2/5-5 Big 12) net. Graboski's goal marked the second time in three matches the defender has scored on a long-range effort. Brittany Morgan and Goldstein assisted on the goal.
Morgan continued the Cyclone assault on the Tigers' net with a goal at the 24:05 mark. Goldstein and Jennifer Dominguez provided assists on the tally.
Goldstein went from being the distributor to the goal scorer when the Orange County, Calif., native scored 14:47 into the second half. Meredith Skitt and Erin Green earned assists on the goal.
The Cyclones did not let up and Theresa Kucera added her fourth goal of the season at the 80:30 mark off an assist from Margaret Powers. Kucera finishes her freshman campaign with a goal in three of her last four matches.
Iowa State delivered its final tally of the night when Emily Nowka scored with 7:19 remaining in regulation off assists from Goldstein and Kucera.
The Cyclones outshot the Tigers 22-17 on the night and they earned their second-straight shutout.
“For us to defend so well against a potent attack was great and they played their hearts out,” Dillinger said.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Jobe made six saves on the evening and her record finished at 7-9-1 this season.
