HOUSTON, Texas - Sydni Jones and Dalyn Varela delivered run-scoring hits in the eighth inning to lift Iowa State to a 3-2 win over Purdue Friday morning at the Marriott Houston Invitational. The Cyclones improve to 4-3 overall, including 1-2 in extra inning contests this season.
The Cyclones and Boilermakers (1-5) were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into extra innings before Jones and Varela came through with a pair of clutch hits.
Jones doubled home Alex Johnson, who was placed on second to start the inning because of the international tie breaker rule. After Jones advanced to third on a groundout, Varela singled to short to drive in her second run of the season.
The Cyclones would need the run as Purdue scraped a run across in the bottom of the inning. Rachel Zabriskie was able to strand a pair of runners at second and third, striking out the last two batters to pick up her fourth win of the season and the 37th of her career.
The Cyclones got on the board in the fourth on a double steal by Jones and Johnson that was well executed and scored Johnson. Purdue tied it in the bottom half of the fourth on Shelby Krammer's second homer of the season.
Zabriskie (4-3) struck out eight batters in the win while allowing just two runs on eight hits.
Suzie Rzegocki (0-3) took the loss for Purdue, giving up seven hits in the game.
Carleigh Berry was the only Cyclone with two hits. Purdue had eight hits to Iowa State's seven.
The Cyclones face No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette at approximately 11:15 a.m.
