HOUSTON, Texas - Alex Johnson became Iowa State's all-time leader with her 105th career run batted in and Iowa State rallied from a 4-0 deficit before falling to No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-5, in eight innings Friday afternoon at the Marriott Houston Invitational. Iowa State falls to 4-4 this season.
Johnson's record-setting RBI came as the Cyclones broke up the no-hitter that was being tossed by Louisiana's Brittany Cuevas in the sixth inning.
Cuevas had dominated the Cyclones before the big sixth frame, striking out eight in the first five innings.
Trailing 4-0, starting pitcher Tori Torrescano blasted her first career homer to lead off the sixth and break up the no hitter. The Cyclones then got three-straight singles from Carrie Monroe, Kelsey Kidwell and Heidi Kidwell to load the bases with no outs.
Carleigh Berry followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and all runners were safe to cut the Ragin Cajun lead to two runs. Courtney Wray then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.
After Cuevas got Sydni Jones to fly out, Johnson came through with a single that plated Heidi Kidwell for her 105th RBI that tied the game at 4-4.
Both teams were scoreless in the seventh inning, sending the Cyclones to extra innings for the second time Friday. But the Cyclones weren't as fortunate this time around as they were earlier in the day when they defeated Purdue, 3-2, in eight innings.
The Ragin Cajuns put two on the board in their half of the eighth and Iowa State got just one run across on a single from Wray. Cuevas got Jones to fly out for the final out of the game.
Cuevas (3-0) got the win for Lousiana-Lafayette (6-0), giving up five runs on six hits. She struck out 11 in the win.
Lauren Kennewell (0-1) took the loss for the Cyclones, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing two runs, just one of which was earned. Torrescano gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of action.
The Cyclones will face No. 20 Texas and host Houston Saturday.
