Cyclones Cruise Past Houston, 9-1

HOUSTON, Texas - Rachel Zabriskie struck out a career-high 13 and Heidi Kidwell went 3-for-4 as Iowa State cruised to a 9-1 win over Houston at the Marriott Houston Invitational Saturday evening. Iowa State, which also got a home run from Alex Johnson, improves to 5-5 this season.
Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a season-high four runs batted in to lead the Cyclones, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Sydni Jones and Amanda Bradberry also had two hits each for Iowa State.
A five-hit first inning helped ISU go on top 3-0. Johnson and Jones had run-scoring hits in the first.
Zabriskie was dealing early, retiring the first six outs on strikeouts. Houston finally got to the junior in the third inning, getting an infield single from Melissa Gregson to cut the Cyclone lead to 3-1.
The Cyclones bounced back in the bottom half of the inning, putting up a crooked number in the form of a five runs. Johnson ripped a two-run homer, her second of the season and the 20th of her career, and Erica Miller had a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1. Heidi Kidwell then collected her third hit of the game, driving home two more runs to give the Cyclones a seven-run lead.
The Cyclones finished it in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Courtney Wray that plated Kelsey Kidwell.
Zabriskie (5-3) was nearly untouchable to the Cougars (4-6), allowing just four hits en route to her fifth win this season and the 38th of her career.
Bailey Watts (3-2) gave up seven runs on nine hits in just two innings of work to take the loss for Houston.
Iowa State closes tournament play Sunday at 11 a.m. against UT-San Antonio.
