IOWA CITY, Iowa? The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk trophy is coming back to Ames. The No. 15 Iowa State gymnastics team secured the annual multi-sport contest with a 194.475-193.825 win over Iowa Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa State improved to 5-5 this season.
With only four points still up for grabs in the Cy-Hawk Series, Iowa State leads 14-9. The winning of the series marks the second time in the past three years the Cyclones have outdueled the Hawkeyes.
“I told the team this week that usually score means everything, except against Iowa,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “Our goal was to beat Iowa, regardless of what our score was. Coming into the meet, I knew if we won Iowa State would mathematically win the series, so we came here to do that. We accomplished that goal, and we are proud to do that for the Cyclone faithful.”
Sophomore Michelle Browning won her second-consecutive all-around title with a 38.900.
The Cyclones notched a 48.575 on bars to begin the contest. Senior Ashley Kent led the ISU bars team with a 9.800, while senior Megan Barnes made her season debut and delivered a 9.750. Barnes, a two-time Big 12 vault champion had been sidelined all season after suffering a torn PCL in the preseason. The Hawkeyes (5-7) tallied a 48.500 on vault, giving ISU the 48.575-48.500 lead after the first event.
While Ronayne was happy to have Barnes back in the lineup, he felt the Salt Lake City, Utah, native has more to provide.
“Megan was very tentative today,” Ronayne said. “I was able to talk to her about the first step of her comeback being behind her. She can now focus on getting better and getting back to her usual stellar self. She's still not 100 percent, and she was holding back a little today.”
ISU posted a 48.350 on vault in its second event. Junior Alex Grant was the Cyclones' top vaulter, scoring a 9.800, and tied for the event title. Freshman Rebecca Ellis made her career debut and scored a 9.725. Ceilia Maccani chipped in with a 9.750. The Cyclones strengthened their lead to 96.925-96.650 at the midway point.
Iowa State distanced itself farther from Iowa in the third rotation, scoring a 48.775 on floor, while the Hawkeyes tallied a 48.475 on beam. Browning led the ISU floor scoring with a 9.825, earning a share of the floor title. Shea Anderson provided a season-high-tying 9.775 and Melanie Tham registered a 9.750. With one event remaining Iowa State led 145.700-145.125.
Ranked ninth on beam in the country, the Cyclones closed out the contest with a clutch performance, scoring a 48.775. Ashley Kent, the ninth-ranked beam performer in the country, led Iowa State with a 9.825 while Browning delivered a 9.800 on the event. Kent's score earned her a share of the beam title.
After being on the road for the last three meets, the Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum for their next contest when Iowa State faces Minnesota Friday at 7 p.m.
