SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sacramento State scored three runs in the second inning en route to a 4-1 win over Iowa State Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Classic. The loss snaps ISU's four-game winning streak and leaves the Cyclones at 13-12 this season.
The Hornets (6-14) scored first with a three-run homer by Alyssa Nakken off ISU pitcher Tori Torrescano in the second inning.
In the fourth, Molly Smith connected on her first homer of the season to make it 4-0.
ISU trimmed into the lead on Alex Johnson's sacrifice fly that plated Heidi Kidwell in the fifth.
Torrescano kept Sacramento State off the board the rest of the way and the Cyclones threatened to tie it in the seventh.
ISU had two chances with the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning, but Sacramento State pitcher Shelby Voelz was able to get Courtney Wray to ground out and Sydni Jones to pop out, ending the threat.
Voelz (3-7) allowed just one run on seven hits to pick up the win.
Torrescano (1-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits.
Kidwell and Erica Miller each collected a pair of hits to lead the Cyclones at the plate.
Iowa State and Sacramento State will meet again Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
