The Cyclones' score matches their previous season high from Feb. 12 at Oklahoma and marks the fourth time this campaign ISU has scored a 196.000 or higher. Cyclones Ashley Kent (beam), Jody McKellar (bars) and Alex Grant (vault) earned event titles. Iowa State's score also marks the second-consecutive week the Cyclones have scored at least a 196.000.
“I'm proud of the direction the team has gone the past two weeks,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We had a few curveballs thrown at us this meet, and the team responded well. On floor, it has been a weak spot for us since we lost Melanie Tham to injury two weeks ago. Also, Anna Robey wasn't able to work out this week due to sickness, and we had to take Jessica Rizzi out of the floor lineup in warm-ups because of an ankle injury. Rebecca Ellis stepped into the floor lineup at the last second and got her job done.”
Ronayne's enthusiasm was heightened by the fact that his team is coming together with postseason competition one week away.
“We're gelling at the right time, and we are as prepared as we're going to be for Big 12s,” Ronayne said.
Iowa State produced a season-best bars performance to start the competition, posting a 49.175. McKellar led the Cyclones with a career-best 9.900, the highest ISU score on the apparatus this season. McKellar's performance earned her the bars title. Ceilia Maccani (9.875) and Kent (9.850) each had season-best performances. Celine Paulus notched a career-high 9.750 and Michelle Browning delivered a strong 9.800 effort. Minnesota (5-11) scored a 48.725 on vault, giving Iowa State the early 49.175-48.725 lead after the first rotation.
The Cyclones had another strong performance in its second rotation, posting a near-season-best 49.100 on vault. Grant was the Cyclones' top scorer on vault, posting a career-high 9.850, which garnered her a share of the event crown. McKellar continued her strong night, posting a career-best 9.825 on the event, as the senior notched back-to-back career highs for the evening. Maccani was strong with a 9.825, while Shea Anderson and Browning each scored 9.800. The Gophers were strong on bars, posting a 48.900. The score after two rotations was 98.275-97.625, with Iowa State leading.
ISU produced another strong effort on in its third rotation, registering a 49.025 floor tally. Iowa State was buoyed by a pair of freshmen on the event, as Elizabeth Stranahan notched a career-high 9.800 and Rebecca Ellis tallied a 9.725 on her collegiate floor debut. Browning led the way for ISU, delivering a 9.875. Paulus contributed to the Cyclone effort, registering a 9.850 and Anderson tied her season high with a 9.775. Minnesota had to count a fall on beam en route to a 48.475 score. The Cyclones strengthened their lead and took a commanding 147.300-146.100 edge with one rotation remaining.
“Our freshmen have struggled throughout this season,” Ronayne said. “They are learning what it takes to be a Division I student-athlete at the most appropriate time of the season for their team.”
Iowa State closed out its meet with a solid 48.925 on beam. Kent was the Cyclones' top beam worker, tallying a 9.850. Kent's score was good enough for the event title. McKellar continued her stellar outing with a 9.800 and Megan Barnes posted a season-high 9.750 on the apparatus. Paulus was also solid, registering a 9.775. Minnesota scored a 49.200 on floor but could not rally past Iowa State.
Minnesota's Alexis Russell won the all-around title with an impressive 39.450. Paulus was the Cyclones' top all-arounder, posting a career-best 39.075 which earned her second-place honors.
Iowa State begins postseason action in its next competition when the Cyclones travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big 12 Championships. The competition is set for March 27 at 2 p.m. in the Devaney Center.
