MISSOULA, Mont? The Iowa State soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the 2010 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Nevada Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Stadium.
Cyclone senior co-captain
Jordan Bishop led the Iowa State (3-0-1) offense with a goal and an assist for a career-high-tying three-point match. Bishop also fired a team-high six shots.
Iowa State had a clear statistical edge in the match in shots (21-15), corner kicks (6-0) and shots on goal (11-5).
“The first half we played well with a lot of energy, and we did everything we needed to,” Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said. “It was important for us to get two first-half goals and capitalize on our chances. (Nevada) ran at us in numbers the second half and did what they are good at. We really had to battle and were able to hold them off.”
The Cyclones opened the scoring 27:32 into the match when Bishop netted her first goal of the campaign. Bishop's tally marked the Cyclones' first goal that came in the opening half of a match this season. Less than three minutes after Bishop put Iowa State ahead 1-0, freshman
Emily Goldstein doubled the Cyclones' lead. Bishop registered the assist on Goldstein's goal, her first of the year. Goldstein's tally was her second of the season and gave her five points this season, both team highs.
“Jordan always plays with a lot of energy, and she got around the goal in dangerous positions when we moved her up today,” Dillinger said. “She played a world-class ball to
Emily Goldstein for our second goal. Those are the things Jordan can do, and we need to continue to see them.”
Nevada (0-2-1) rallied in the second half with its lone goal coming at the 60:54 mark, courtesy of Erin Smith. Nevada's tally was the first goal the Cyclone defense has given up in the run of play this season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Jobe made her first collegiate start Sunday and registered four saves. Jobe's season record improved to 3-0.
The Cyclones are back in action Friday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton.
