CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Bonus points from
Andrew Sorenson at 165 pounds,
Jon Reader at 174 pounds,
Cole Shafer at 184 pounds and
Kyle Simonson at heavyweight paved the way for the No. 13 Iowa State wrestling team's 27-15 victory over No. 7 American. The victory in the UNI-Dome propels the Cyclones into Sunday's NWCA National Duals consolation semifinals. ISU will wrestle No. 3 Oklahoma State Sunday at 9 a.m. The winner of that match will wrestle for fifth place. The loser will wrestle for seventh.
Brandon Jones started off the evening against American in fine fashion with a tough 8-7 victory over Thomas Williams at 125 pounds. The true freshman fell behind early but battled back and registered just enough ride time for the deciding point.
Nate Carr Jr. bounced back from a close loss to third-ranked Jason Chamberlain of Boise State by winning an overtime thriller over eighth-ranked Ganbayar Sanjaa. Carr, unranked, turned Sanjaa early in the overtime period to ensure a 7-4 victory at 149 pounds. The win is Carr's second win over top-10 competition this year.
Sorenson continued his dominance throughout the day by repeatedly taking down Patrick Graham in the third period before finishing the match with a fall at the 6:20 mark. Sorenson earned bonus points in all three of his matches.
Reader racked up an amazing 10 takedowns and amassed over four minutes of riding time in an impressive technical fall over Philip Borreiro. The win pushes Reader to 21-0 on the year and 106 career victories.
Shafer bounced back from a tough first match by dominating Thomas Barreiro in their match at 184 pounds. Shafer took Barreiro down six times on his way to an 18-6 major decision.
Kyle Simonson had a tall task on his hands against second-rated Ryan Flores, but the redshirt junior was more than up to the task. Simonson, unranked, reversed Flores twice and was up by a score of 10-4 before the American coaching staff decided that Flores could no longer wrestle.
The Cyclones will wrestle Big 12 rival Oklahoma State Sunday at 9 a.m.
