NORMAN, Okla. - After conceding two goals to Oklahoma, the Iowa State soccer team mounted a comeback effort off a goal from sophomore Jennifer Dominguez with 24:40 remaining in the match. However, the Cyclones could not find the equalizer and fell 2-1 to the Sooners Friday night at the OU Soccer Complex.
With her fourth goal of the year, Dominguez vaulted into a tie for the team high in goals and points (9) with fellow forward Brittany Morgan.
"The goal was the result of a lot of hard work from Dominguez and guts," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "She worked her tail off as she always does and was rewarded for it."
Oklahoma (6-9/1-3 Big 12) opened the scoring 13:11 into the first half off a goal from Caitlin Mooney. The Sooners took their 1-0 edge in the halftime break.
"We need to do a better job of not putting ourselves in holes that we have to dig out of," Dillinger said. "We are forcing ourselves to scrap and work so hard just to get out of the holes we create."
Iowa State (6-8-1/0-5 Big 12) came out strong in the second half in search of the game-tying goal. Iowa State registered the half's first two shots and corner kick. Senior Mary Kate McLaughlin came within inches of knotting the match at one with a header off a free kick that forced Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire to make a quality save.
"We played hard tonight and created good scoring chances," Dillinger said. "We're just lacking that killer instinct in the final third to capitalize on our chances. We're doing a lot of the right things, but just not finishing and in soccer finishing is extremely important."
The Cyclones' hopes of tying the match were dented when Oklahoma's first shot of the second half was credited with crossing the goal line on a close call. The Sooners' Annalisa Hall looped a shot that hit the bottom side of the crossbar and was judged to have been a goal.
Oklahoma outshot Iowa State 12-6 in the match and also won the corner-kick battle 6-4.
The Cyclones had two goalkeepers see action in the match. Freshman Andrea Swanson started and went the opening 56 minutes and allowed both goals. Sophomore Maddie Jobe replaced Swanson for the final 34 minutes and made five saves.
Dominguez and McLaughlin tied for the Iowa State team high in shots with two apiece.
Iowa State takes a break from league play in its next match with a trip to Southeast Missouri State Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CDT.
