AMES, Iowa - Marc Sonnen hit three 3-pointers in the final six minutes of the game to help UNI down Iowa State, 69-62 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State held a 54-52 lead with 4:22 left in contest until Sonnen hit back-to-back treys and Seth Tuttle scored a bucket to push the Panthers out in front 60-54 with 2:05 left in the game.
The loss drops Iowa State to 5-2 and the Panthers improve to 6-1.
Royce White led Iowa State with 15 points and eight rebounds and Chris Allen also chipped in with 15 points. Iowa State was outrebounded for the first time this season, 33-29.
Iowa State held a 14-4 lead behind eight points from Chris Babb early in the contest. Babb hit a pair of 3-pointers to give ISU the early lead. UNI then went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 14-14.
The Cyclones held a 19-16 lead after a Chris Allen bucket, but the Panthers went on a 17-7 run to go up 33-26 with just under two minutes left before the break. Anthony James got hot for UNI, scoring seven points in the run. UNI led 33-28 at the break, as James had 11 first-half points for UNI.
The Panthers maintained their lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, stretching their lead to seven points on two occasions. Iowa State regained the lead on an 8-0 run, as White and Percy Gibson scored four points each to give the Cyclones a 45-44 lead with 8:56 left in the game.
UNI's Johnny Moran hit a trey from the corner to push the Panthers back up 49-47 with 6:45 left in the game. Scott Christopherson then hit a pair of baskets to give ISU a 53-52 lead, but Sonnen hit a big 3-pointer to push UNI back up 55-54 with under four minutes remaining.
Sonnen then hit another big trey to give UNI the 58-54 advantage with 2:48 left in the game.
The Cyclones shot 42.3 percent from the field and UNI hit 48.0 percent. ISU made just 4-of-18 from 3-point range, its lowest output of the season.
Iowa State travels to Michigan on Saturday, facing the No. 15 Wolverines at 11 a.m.
