ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 14 Michigan had three players score in double figures, including a game-high 19 points from Tim Hardaway Jr., in a 76-66 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon at the Crisler Arena.
The Cyclones struggled to find their groove offensively, shooting a season-low 35.8 percent from the floor. The Cyclones were 6-of-27 from 3-point range.
The Cyclones fall to 5-3 on the season.
The Wolverines used a 21-8 run to open up the second half while taking control of the game. Iowa State made a comeback late. The Cyclones were down 68-50 with five minutes left in the game before scoring 10-straight points to cut the lead to 68-60 with less than a minute remaining.
Chris Allen then made a three-pointer with 0:24 seconds left to close the gap to six points (72-66), but the Wolverines made their free-throws down the stretch.
"We finally started to believe in ourselves late in the game," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We had some good looks at the basket, but they just didn't go in today. We looked like a bunch of individuals in the middle part of the second half, but then we started to play as a team. It was one of those days where the ball didn't go in the basket."
Michigan closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 34-25 lead at intermission. The Cyclones went on an 8-0 run of their own to move ahead 23-21 until UM took the lead for good.
Royce White finished the game with his third career double-double, registering 22 points and 13 rebounds. Allen added 11 points and Percy Gibson came off the bench to score seven points.
Iowa State plays host to Prairie View A&M on Tuesday (Dec. 6).
