AMES, Iowa -- Tyrus McGee's steal and dunk with 6:10 left in the game keyed a late Iowa State surge that put away Central Michigan in a 59-52 win Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. Royce White led the Cyclones with 14 points as the Chippewas trailed nearly the entire game but for less than a minute in the second half. The win lifts Iowa State to 8-3 overall, and Central Michigan is 5-6.
Central Michigan had steadily closed Iowa State's halftime lead of 35-26. The Chippewas took their first lead 48-47 on a jumper by Trey Zeigler with 7:21 left in the game. Two free throws by Chris Allen tied the score and then McGee made the play of the game, driving down the middle of the floor to the hoop to give Iowa State a 52-50 lead.
The Cyclones held the Chippewas without a basket in the last 6:50 minutes of the game en route to the Cyclones winning their third straight game. CMU's Trey Ziegler led his team with 19 points.
Iowa State roared out to a 9-0 lead in the game's first 3:08 on a three by Chris Babb. Central Michigan came back and pulled within two points at 13-11 at the 13:32 mark. But Iowa State struck back and a three-point bucket by McGee moved the Cyclones to a 30-16 advantage with seven minutes left in the first half. That would be Iowa State's last points for the next 4 1/2 minutes as Central Michigan clawed back and closed to 30-26 on a field goal by Austin McBroom. The Cyclones scored the final five points of the first half and led 35-26 at the break.
Iowa State plays host to Lipscomb Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
