RESULTS VS. WIU | RESULTS VS. CREIGHTON
AMES, Iowa - It was a historic evening at the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility as the Iowa State softball team swept its first two games of the 2011 season, defeating Creighton 7-0 and knocking off Western Illinois 17-0 in five innings.
Rachel Zabriskie tied a school record in the first game with 13 strikeouts. In the second game, Iowa State's 17-run output was the second-highest in head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler's tenure as leader of the Cyclones and highest in a home game by Iowa State.
Zabriskie had a strong start to her 2011 campaign, taking a no-hitter 5 1/3 innings before Creighton recorded its first hit of the evening. The senior tied a career-high and tied a school-record by striking out 13 Bluejays, with at least one CU batter striking out swinging in each inning. Zabriskie only allowed one hit and one walk in her six innings of work.
Leading off the second inning, freshman Sara Davison got a double on the first at bat of her Iowa State career. After advancing to third on a sac bunt, Davison came in on a groundout by Amandine Habben for the first run of the game and the 2011 season for Iowa State.
Erica Miller drove in Bianca Lopez on a single after Lopez hit a single to start the third frame and advanced to second on a passed ball. Dalyn Varela tacked on a second run when she drove in Tori Torrescano on a single to right-center.
In the bottom frame of the fifth, Torrescano crushed a two-run homer to left-center to put the Cyclones up 5-0 and end Sammy Snygg's day for the Jays on the mound. Torrescano drove a third run in during the bottom of the sixth on a double to right.
In the second game, Iowa State wasted little time getting on the board. Batting first as the visitors, Miller drove in Heidi Kidwell on a double down the right field line to make it 1-0, Cyclones.
After scoring an additional run in the second, the Cyclones burst out in the third, putting nine runs on the board and batting around in the inning. The Cyclones continued to pile on the runs in the fourth, placing another six on the board in the frame.
Miller led the Cyclones in the second game, going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Torrescano drove in three runs while Lopez and Davison added two RBIs each.
Torrescano picked up the win in the second game, pitching five shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out three.
