CHARLESTON, S.C. - Cyclone pitchers Bree Holliday and Rachel Zabriskie stifled the offenses of Marist (0-1) and Liberty (0-1), respectively, on Friday at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. Holliday led Iowa State to a 10-1 run-rule win over Marist before Zabriskie shutout Liberty, 3-0, to move the Cyclones to 7-4 on the season.
Freshman shortstop Sara Davison made her mark on the day as well, slamming her first career home run in the fourth inning against the Liberty Lady Flames.
Sophomore Erica Miller drove in four runs in the Cyclones' route of the Marist Red Foxes, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning, Miller's first bomb of the season.
Holliday (2-1) threw the second complete game of her career and was virtually unscathed against the Red Foxes, despite walking six batters and having to work out of two bases-loaded jams in the third and fourth frames.
Ashley Coriss would record the only RBI for the Red Foxes on a single to score Lausch but Holliday shut down Alyssa Zahka, who lined out to get the Cyclones out of the inning without much damage.
The Cyclones put up a crooked number against Marist starter Emily Osterhaus (0-1) in the third, scoring four runs on three hits, a walk and two errors to take the early lead. The inning also included Heidi Kidwell's eighth stolen base of the young season.
Miller's homer drove in outfielder Carleigh Berry who singled and stole second to lead off the Iowa State half of the frame. An error by Marist third baseman Haley Birnbaum scored Cyclone designated hitter Tori Torrescano two batters later.
Caitlin Schell took over pitching duties for Osterhaus to start the fifth but only recorded one out, walking four, before Osterhaus reentered. When the third out was finally recorded, Iowa State had plated two on bases-loaded walks by Kidwell and Bianca Lopez and Miller had sent Berry home for the second time in the game on a fly out to right field.
Friday marked the second time this season Zabriskie (4-1) has thrown a shutout and the 13th time in her four seasons at Iowa State. Zabriskie did not allow a hit until the Flames' half of the fourth inning, striking out 12 batters through seven innings of work. Liberty put runners in scoring position only twice against the Cyclones who did not commit an error in either game.
Facing starter Tiffani Smith (0-1), the Cyclone offense wasted no time as Kidwell led off the bottom of the first with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Lopez. An error by left fielder Meredith Crisante brought Kidwell around for the first score of the game.
Sophomore catcher Amandine Habben reached on a one-out single in the second frame and eventually came around to score on a fly out by Kidwell. Iowa State's only unrealized threat came in the third with the bases loaded and two outs when Berry grounded out to send Zabriskie back to work.
The Cyclones' final run of the game and of the day was Davison's home run in the fourth.
Saturday night, the Cyclones are in action again, this time facing Notre Dame at 5 p.m. CST and Drexel in the nightcap at 7 p.m. CST.
