AMES, Iowa - Sophomore Erica Miller hit two home runs Thursday as the Iowa State softball team split its doubleheader with Creighton at the Southwest Athletic Complex . The Cyclones took the first game, 7-1, while the Bluejays prevailed in the second, 9-3. The split moves Iowa State to 16-11 on the year and Creighton to 12-15.
Miller's first home run was a three-run shot in the bottom of the first in game one, diving home Sara Davison and Dalyn Varela. Miller struck again in the bottom of the sixth on a 3-1 pitch to centerfield to draw Iowa State within four, trailing 7-3.
Rachel Zabriskie's complete game in the first game of the doubleheader was the 79th of her career. The senior now stands alone atop the schools complete game chart, surpassing Alyssa Ransom's 78 complete games.
After Miller put the Cyclones up 3-0 with her fourth homer of the season, the Bluejays pulled one back in the top of the third as Amy Baker sent a solo home run off the scoreboard in right-centerfield to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
Iowa State broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth when Anna Cole added a run to the Cyclone account with an RBI-double just over the shortstop's glove to bring home Tori Torrescano and make it 4-1. Amandine Habben struck a two-RBI single that brought home Miller and Cole to give Iowa State a 6-1 advantage before Erin Johnson made it 7-1 with her first hit and RBI as a Cyclone with an RBI single.
Zabriskie picked up the win to improve to 10-6 on the season, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out 10. Kylie Hovinga picked up the loss for the Bluejays to drop to 2-3 on the season. Hovinga allowed 11 hits and seven runs, three earned, in six innings while striking out two.
In the second game, Creighton opened up the scoring in the top of the third when Christa Ruf hit a low liner to right field to score Ellen Homan to give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage. The Bluejays put on a second run in the fourth when McKenna Setlik had a pinch-hit single to score Blair Lowe and give Creighton a 2-0 lead.
After a five-run fifth frame by the Bluejays to make it 7-0, Iowa State finally got on the board. Kelsey Enslin led off the inning with a double into left-center. She was brought home on a Davison sac fly. The next batter, Varela, hit a home run over the leftfield wall to reduce the deficit to 7-2 before Miller's shot closed the Iowa State scoring
Creighton's Brittany Telecky took the win in the second game, improving to 2-0 on the season. She went five innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Lauren Kennewell took the loss for Iowa State, falling to 1-1 on the year. She went 4 1/3 innings allowing five hits and five runs, three earned, while striking out four.
Iowa State gets back to Big 12 play Saturday and Sunday with games at No. 21 Texas A&M. The Saturday affair begins at 2 p.m. CDT with the Sunday game slated for noon CDT.
