AMES, Iowa ? The No. 19 Iowa State gymnastics team tied No. 20 Minnesota 195.325 ? 195.325 Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones finished out their home season against the Gophers and three Cyclone seniors were honored following the event ? Alex Grant, Jacquelyn Holmes and Jody McKellar.
“I like a tie as much as I like losing, it's just not as much fun as winning,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “The tie makes it harder because if we had done our best and tied it would be one thing, but we can do a lot better. I expect us to be better.”
Cyclone junior Michelle Browning won the All-Around title with a score of 39.225, her second highest all-around tally of the season. Browning also won the floor event with a 9.875 performance, which ties her season high on the apparatus.
McKellar won the bars event against the Gophers (9-4-1) with a score of 9.900. McKellar has scored 9.900 or higher on four occasions this season, highlighted by a 9.95 tally against Iowa.
Minnesota's Kayla Slechta won the vault event with a score of 9.850, while Gopher Dusti Russell took the balance beam title (9.900).
The tie marked the fifth time in Iowa State history the Cyclones have ended level with their opponent. Iowa State tied Brigham Young earlier this season (Jan. 29) with each team posting tallies of 194.925.
Iowa State's team score on floor of 49.150 was the third-highest of the season for the Cyclones (7-4-2). Sophomore Elizabeth Stranahan had a career-high performance on the uneven bars with a score of 9.725. Stranahan also leveled her career high on floor with a 9.825.
“I can't say enough about the team's effort on floor tonight,” Ronayne said. “We tell them all the time to attack, especially when it's a close meet. They didn't hold back, so I couldn't be more proud of them.”
The Cyclones hit the road Sunday, March 13 to close out the Big 12 season against Nebraska. The meet is set to begin in Lincoln at 2 p.m. (CST).
