AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State battled back from an 18-point second-half deficit before falling short to Texas, 62-55 Tuesday night at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Iowa State (14-6, 4-3) was down 44-26 with 13:38 left in the game, but cut the UT lead to three points (58-55) with 0:25 seconds left on a Chris Babb 3-pointer. However, UT made its free-throws down the stretch to secure the win, improving to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 play.
The Cyclones shot a season-low 33.3 percent and struggled from beyond the arc, making just 5-of-21 shots from long range.
Iowa State held a 13-8 lead with 10:26 left in the first half until it hit a dry spell. UT went on a 15-2 run to move ahead 23-15. Royce White scored down low to end the drought with 2:30 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 23-17. The Longhorns went into the break with a 28-22 lead after a Clint Chapman putback in the closing seconds.
The Cyclones shot just 31.0 percent from the floor, but held Longhorn star J'Covan Brown to 0-for-9 shooting in the first half. ISU did a good job on Brown, the Big 12's leading scorer, all night, holding him to 3-of-16 from the floor and 12 points.
Myck Kabongo led UT with 13 points.
White led Iowa State with his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. He also had five assists. Melvin Ejim chipped with 12 points.
Iowa State returns home to face No. 5 Kansas on Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN.
