TEMPE, Ariz. - Iowa State softball (2-5, 0-0 Big 12) suffered two losses on Saturday, falling in five innings to both Iowa (5-4, 0-0 Big Ten) and Arizona State (9-2, 0-0 Pac-12) by the scores of 26-5 and 9-0, respectively.
Held to no hits through three innings against Iowa, the Cyclones' first hit came in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Lexi Slater, an RBI double to put Iowa State's second and third runs on the board. The hit extended Slater's hitting streak to four games before ending with an 0-for-2 night against Arizona State. Seven games into her collegiate career, Slater is hitting .412 with seven hits, two doubles and four RBIs and is one of three players leading the team with three walks.
Iowa starter Kayla Massey (2-2) pitched all five innings, allowing just four hits but walking five.
The Hawkeye half of the third inning was when the game got away from Iowa State. Iowa scored 13 runs in the frame as the Cyclones used three pitchers. Senior Lauren Kennewell (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings in her first start of the season, allowing five hits and five runs, four earned, while walking one and fanning two. Freshman Miranda Kemp and sophomore Breeanna Holliday relieved Kennewell in the third.
The Hawkeyes' Katie Keim, Bradi Wall and Liz Watkins led Iowa with five RBIs each including two home runs by Keim. Iowa is the first team to ever record 20 hits, runs or earned runs against Iowa State, accomplishing all three feats in the most lopsided game in the series' history.
Against the reigning national champ Sun Devils, freshman Jorden Smith collected the only two Iowa State hits against Mackenzie Popescue (2-1) who didn't allow a run through five innings, walking one and striking out one.
The Sun Devils plated three runs in each of the first three innings on RBIs from Annie Lockwood (3), Elizabeth Caporuscio (2), Lucy Aubrecht, Alix Johnson and Bailey Wigness.
Cyclone junior Tori Torrescano (2-2) faced three batters without recording an out before being relieved by Madison Jones in the bottom of the first. Torrescano, who recorded the final out in the second inning and faced three more batters to start the third, officially threw 0.1 innings, gave up four hits and six runs with two outs. Jones threw one and one-third innings before giving way to Kemp and Kennewell, who pitched the final two innings and held Arizona State to its only scoreless inning, the fourth.
On Sunday, the Cyclones close the weekend with a 10 a.m. CST start against Minnesota. The Gophers defeated the Cyclones, 9-1 on Friday.
