AMES, Iowa – An eight-run third inning by No. 6 Texas helped propel the Longhorns (26-2, 5-0 Big 12) to a 11-2 five-inning win over Iowa State (9-18, 0-3 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
Down 1-0 after the first frame, Iowa State rallied in the bottom of the first. Lexi Slater reached on a fielder's choice and Tori Torrescano on an error by Texas shortstop Taylor Thom. Sara Rice took advantage of the opportunity, blasting a two-run double into left-center field to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Rice's two RBI's marked her first-career multiple-RBI hit and game as a Cyclone.
The Longhorns got back in front in the top of the third. Lexy Bennett reached first on an infield single, which was followed up by a Courtney Craig home run to left field. Two pitches later, Thom gave Texas a 5-2 lead with a long solo home run to left-center field. Madison Jones' introduction at the pitcher's slot did not help as she allowed a single, double and a hit by pitch, respectively, before Kim Bruins blasted a grand slam over the fence to put the Longhorns ahead 9-2.
The Longhorns were able to engineer the first run of the game in the top of the first. Taylor Hoagland drew a four-pitch walk and Brejae Washington hit a single. After Bennett advanced the runners on a groundout, Craig hit a deep fly ball to centerfield to drive home Hoagland and put UT up 1-0.
Bruins picked up the win for the Longhorns to improve to 5-1 on the season. Bruins conceded two unearned runs on three hits while striking out three. She supported her own cause with five RBIs. Torrescano was tagged with the loss, falling to 6-11 for the campaign. The junior threw 2.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits while walking two.
Iowa State continues its home stand Tuesday when Northern Iowa comes to the Southwest Athletic Complex. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CST.
