LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Sara Rice hit the first home run of her career and the Cyclones (10-20, 0-4 Big 12) scored seven runs, the most in five games, on Friday but Texas Tech (28-7, 1-2 Big 12) hit three home runs and scored six unearned runs, to defeat Iowa State, 19-7, at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders struck first, plating two in the first inning on a two-out home run by Tech designated player Adriana Perez who hit her fifth home run in three games. Perez finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a double.
Iowa State came alive in the second inning, scoring five runs, all with two outs, on RBI-singles from Sara Davison, Lexi Slater (2 RBIs), Tori Torrescano and a fielder's choice by Amber Ewert to put the Cyclones on top, 5-2.
Texas Tech retook the lead for good in the bottom of the second, scoring six unearned runs after an error by Slater. Torrescano (6-13) was replaced by Taylor Smith after pitching 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and six runs, two earned, walking two and fanning one.
Pitching in the third frame, Cyclone senior Lauren Kennewell allowed four more Red Raider runs to cross the plate, including two on a right field home run by Emily Bledsoe, to give the home team the 11-5 lead.
Davison scored her second run of the night on an Erica Miller single in the fourth for Iowa State's sixth run of the game before Tech added seven more runs in the bottom of the frame. Logan Hall tallied three of the runs, hitting the home team's third home run of the game.
Rice led off the Cyclone fifth with a home run to center for Iowa State's final run of the game.
Tech's Cara Custer (16-5) threw four innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The teams retake the field at noon CST on Saturday for the second of the weekend's three games.
