LUBBOCK, Texas - Iowa State (10-22, 0-6 Big 12) and Texas Tech (30-7, 3-2 Big 12) battled on Sunday, taking a 3-3 tie into the eighth inning before the Red Raiders emerged with the 5-3 victory on their fourth home run of the game.
Iowa State freshman Jorden Smith hit her first home run of the season, and Erica Miller extended her hitting streak to four games with a single in the top of the eighth. Miller finished the weekend hitting .444 against Tech with home runs in each of the first two games. After 32 games, Miller leads the Cyclones batting .374 and is second on the team with five homers.
Emily Bledsoe, the second batter of the game, put a 3-1 Taylor Smith pitch over the left field wall for an early 1-0 Texas Tech lead. After the homer, Smith shut down 14 of the next 16 batters she faced before giving up two more hits, back-to-back home runs by Mikey Kenney and Bledsoe, in the top of the sixth. Smith was relieved by Tori Torrescano after five plus innings, giving up five hits and three runs with no walks or strikeouts.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Smith's first career homer tied the game at 1-1.
The Cyclones rallied in the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 after a leadoff hitter Dalyn Varela singled and pinch runner Erin Johnson advanced to third on a double by Jorden Smith to put runners in scoring position with no outs. The next batter, catcher Amandine Habben, grounded out to score Johnson. Sara Davison grounded out to third for the second out of the inning but freshman Amber Ewert, who was 0-for-2 in the game, doubled on an 0-2 pitch to plate Smith and extend the contest.
Iowa State failed to take advantage of a leadoff single by Erica Miller to begin the Iowa State eighth, giving Texas Tech the opportunity it needed to win the game in the bottom of the frame. Mikey Kenney singled to start the Red Raiders off but was tagged out attempting to steal second. Torrescano gave up a single to Bledsoe, who was erased on a fielder's choice by Sandy James, to bring up Adriana Perez. Perez, who entered Sunday's game 6-for- 7 against the Cyclones on the weekend, smashed the first pitch she saw over the left field wall for the 5-3 Red Raider victory.
Cara Custer (17-5) threw all eight innings for Texas Tech, allowing eight hits, three runs, walking one and striking out four. Torrescano (6-15) picked up her third loss of the weekend after pitching 2.2 innings in relief, giving up four hits and two runs, walking none and striking out none.
Iowa State is on the road again on Wednesday, traveling to Omaha, Neb. to play a make-up game at Creighton at 5 p.m. CST.
