OMAHA, Neb. - Iowa State junior Tori Torrescano blasted two home runs as the Cyclones (11-22, 0-6 Big 12) defeated Creighton (17-15-1, 6-3 MVC) 6-3 on Wednesday at the Creighton Sports Complex, ending a four game Cyclone losing streak.
Torrescano's third multi-home run game of the season, the fourth of her career, extended Iowa State's streak to four games with a home run and her personal hitting streak to five games. Torrescano's two four baggers give her 24 career home runs, third most at Iowa State, and 20 games with two or more RBIs.
Up in the top of the first inning, Torrescano took a 2-0 pitch from Creighton's Sammy Snygg (3-4) over the left field wall for the 2-0 Cyclone lead. Iowa State is 9-1 this season when putting up the first run of a game.
The Cyclones' two run lead stood until a single by first baseman Erica Miller plated Erin Johnson, who entered the game to run for Amandine Habben reached on an error to lead off the frame. Torrescano was the next batter, again taking Snygg deep to left and giving the Cyclones a comfortable 6-0 lead after five innings.
The Bluejays would not go quietly though, scoring two runs in the sixth on pinch hitter Brittnie Kreiser's single to third and adding a third with first baseman Amy Baker's leadoff home run.
Sophomore Taylor Smith (3-1) threw 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, walking three and striking out three. Freshman Madison Jones earned the first save of her career, pitching the final 1.1 innings and giving up one run on two hits and striking out two.
Snygg, who moved to third base for the sixth inning before returning to the circle in the seventh, threw six innings, giving up six runs, two earned, on four Cyclone hits while walking four and striking out one.
The Cyclones return home on Friday for a two-day, three-game series with No. 14 Texas A&M. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday with game one scheduled for 2 p.m. CST and will follow it with a noon first pitch on Saturday.
