LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5 Big 12) got out to a 24-point lead in the first half and never looked back on their way to a 34-14 win on Saturday against the Iowa State Cyclones (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) at the University of Kansas Memorial Stadium. The loss is Iowa State's first against the Jayhawks in the last five meetings between the two squads.
Keys of the Game
Kansas totaled 333 yards of total offense en route to a 24-7 lead against the Cyclones in the first half. The lone first-half score for the Cyclones came from a three-yard strike from quarterback Grant Rohach to tight end E.J. Bibbs. Iowa State would start the second half with the ball and came out firing. On the opening drive, running back Aaron Wimberly tallied 40 of the 75 yards on the ground in just three plays. Rohach would hit wide receiver D'Vario Montgomery for a 35-yard touchdown, scoring after just four plays.
Led by junior quarterback Michael Cummings, Kansas would strike again with 2:49 to play in the third-quarter with a nine-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to take a 31-14 lead over Iowa State. The Cyclones would be unable to overcome the deficit as Kansas would go on to win 34-14.
Offensive Players of Note...
D'Vario Montgomery. The redshirt sophomore wide receiver set a new career-high with 130 yards receiving, besting his previous career-high of 100 he set at Texas this season. Montgomery was also responsible for Iowa State's second touchdown of the game and it was the second-consecutive game the receiver has scored a touchdown.
Bibbs recorded six catches for 37 yards. The senior tight end added a touchdown at the end of the first half off a three-yard strike from quarterback Grant Rohach. Bibbs extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 21, which ties for the third-longest streak in school history.
Wide receiver Allen Lazard also tallied five catches for 70 yards, while Wimberly led Iowa State on the ground with 97 yards on 15 attempts for 6.5 yards per carry.
Defensive Players of Note...
Linebacker Kane Seeley had a breakout game for Iowa State, setting a career-high and notching a game-high 13 tackles. Seeley also added nine tackles.
Kamari Cotton-Moya was strong for Iowa State with 12 tackles and 10 solo. The defensive back also recorded one pass break up and assisted on a tackle for loss.
