WACO, Texas – No. 2 Baylor defeated Iowa State, 45-27 on Saturday at McLane Stadium, despite the Cyclones holding the nation's No. 1 offense to its lowest output of the season. With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 2-5 on the year, and 1-3 in Big 12 play, while the Bears improve to 7-0.
It was all Baylor early, as the Bears scored the first 35 points of the game, including four rushing touchdowns. A balance Bear attack had 191 rushing yards and 186 passing yards in the first half. The Cyclones got on the board with 4:49 left in the half on a three-yard touchdown run by freshman Joshua Thomas. Thomas had a key 42 yard rush earlier in the drive to set up the score. The drive was started by an interception by freshman Brian Peavy, as Iowa State forced its first turnover of the game.
Despite the halftime deficit, the script was flipped in the second half. The Cyclones came out of the locker room and put together a 10-play 75-yard drive that culminated in a two-yard touchdown toss from Joel Lanning to Quenton Bundrage. The touchdown cut the Baylor lead to 35-14, and would be the only score of the quarter for either side. It was just the third time this season that the potent Baylor offense has been held scoreless for an entire quarter. In total, the Cyclones held Baylor to just 43 yards in the third stanza.
Iowa State struck first in the fourth quarter as well, with Lanning tossing his second touchdown pass of the afternoon, finding Jauan Wesley in the corner of the end zone for a four-yard score. Following a missed extra point, the Baylor lead was 35-20 with 7:47 to go in the game.
Following a Baylor field goal and touchdown pass from Jared Stidham to Corey Coleman on back-to-back Bear drives, the lead was 45-20 with 2:13 to play.
The Cyclones put together one final scoring drive on Lanning's third touchdown pass of the day. The Ankeny, Iowa, native found Bundrage, who made a spectacular play to reach the end zone with 10 seconds left in the game, making the final score 45-27.
Players of Note...
Mike Warren continues to be the leading freshman running back in the nation with another tremendous outing on Saturday. Warren was ISU's workhorse, with 28 attempts for 145 yards on the day, good for 5.2 yards per rush.
Defensively, Dale Pierson provided a little bit of everything for Iowa State. The senior defensive end collected five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two pass break-ups and a forced fumble for the Cyclones.
