AMES, Iowa – Redshirt freshman Mike Warren broke Iowa State's rookie rushing record with 175 yards on the ground as the Cyclones beat Kansas, 38-13, Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play, while Kansas remains winless at 0-4 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Warren's rushing record came on 18 attempts for an average of 9.7 yards per carry, including a 62-yard dash for his first career TD in the third quarter. The Lawton, Oklahoma, native, broke Michael Wagner's old record of 170 yards at Oklahoma State in 2000.
The Cyclones broke open a close game late in the second quarter on a pair of Sam Richardson touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, to give ISU a 17-0 lead at the break.
Netten got the scoring started with a 34-yard field goal with 1:54 left in the first quarter before Richardson scored on back-to-back drives late in the second quarter. The Cyclones marched down the field after taking over at their own 38-yard line and Richardson faked the handoff to Joshua Thomas and walked in from four yards out for the first TD of the game.
After the defense forced a Kansas punt, ISU again used a nice drive that resulted in Richardson hitting Allen Lazard on a slant route that covered nine yards for the score to give the Cyclones their biggest halftime lead since the 2013 game against Kansas.
After Warren's long run, Tre' Parmalee put Kansas on the board with a 47-yard catch and run for a touchdown with 5:36 left in the third quarter. The Cyclones struck right back as Richardson connected with D'Vario Montgomery on a 13-yard pass for a score. Warren went on to add a seven-yard touchdown run for his second score of the game.
