NORMAN, Okla. – No. 14 Oklahoma rolled out to a 21-9 lead in the first half and never looked back on its way to a 52-16 win against Iowa State on Saturday at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The Cyclones fall to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play, while Oklahoma improves to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
Iowa State came out of the gate strong, marching down the field on the first possession of the game and putting together a 10-play, 50-yard drive highlighted by a 19-yard screen pass from Joel Lanning to Mike Warren on third down to take the ball to the OU 32 yard line. ISU's opening drive would culminate in a 43-yard field goal by kicker Cole Netten to give the Cyclones an early 3-0 lead over the Sooners.
The Sooners would score on the first play of their first drive after quarterback Baker Mayfield connected with Dimitri Flowers for a 75-yard touchdown to give OU a 7-3 edge with 10:33 remaining in the first. The Sooners would make it 21-3 by the end of the first quarter with a pair of touchdowns by Mayfield.
The Cyclones would receive some help after Levi Peters recorded his second forced fumble of the season early in the second quarter. Iowa State would turn Peters' recovery into a 45-yard field goal by Netten to make it 21-6. Netten would come through for Iowa State yet again, drilling a 51-yard field goal with 1:14 left in the second quarter to bring the score to 21-9.
Despite the scores, the Oklahoma lead was too much to overcome as the ISU offense stalled and the defense was unable to stop the Sooners. OU would grab its fifth conference win of the season with a 52-16 victory over ISU.
