CONWAY, S.C. – The Iowa State softball team improved to 5-0 on the season after recording a 4-2 win over Ole Miss Friday morning at the CCU Softball Field to kick off the “Battle at the Beach”. Ole Miss is now 3-4 on the season.
Brittany Gomez had her first home run in nearly two years, while Rachel Hartman drove in the game-winning RBI-single in the fifth inning.
A Home Run for B-Go?
Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning on a solo home run by Allison Brown off Brianna Weilbacher. With Brittany Gomez leading off, Ole Miss brought everyone in, expecting the speedy Gomez to slap one or lay a bunt down. Gomez caught everyone off guard as she unloaded a home run over the right field wall to tie the game 1-1. It was her first home run since her freshman season when she had one against Temple.
Moving Ahead
The Cyclones then were able to get ahead in the bottom of the second. Aly Cappaert recorded a one-out single and ISU followed that with Jorden Spendlove reaching on an error which saw Ole Miss throw the ball out of play, putting runners on second and third. Nychole Antillon did her job from there, as the freshman punched an RBI-single to right to make it 2-1 Cyclones.
Back Ahead to Stay Ahead
The Rebels were able to manufacture a run in the top of the third inning to tie it back up. Both teams had close calls to get back ahead, but could not cash in on anything. It was not until the bottom of the fifth that Iowa State was able to break the deadlock. Gomez led off with a single, her 150th career hit, and then recorded her fifth stolen base of the season, her 60th of her career. Kelsey McFarland bunted her over to third during the ensuing at-bat. Two batters later, Rachel Hartman brought home the leading run to make it 3-2.
The Cyclones got in position for another breakthrough in the bottom of the sixth as Cappaert led off with a walk and Spendlove and Antillon got base hits. Two batters later, Gomez chopped one to third. Ole Miss' third baseman Brown made the decision to throw home, but it was too late as Cappaert's pinch runner, Kaila Konz, had already slide home safely to make it 4-2 Cyclones. However, ISU could not get more, leaving the bases loaded.
From there Katie Johnson, who came in relief for starter Brianna Weilbbacher in the fifth, got the final outs to get her fifth win of the season.
Player of the Game
Brittany Gomez. Gomez went 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run and a pair of RBIs. Gomez now has 150 career hits, just one outside of ISU's all-time top-10 and got her fifth steal of the season to get to 60 in her career.
