AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Texas Saturday evening at McCombs Field. The Cyclones fell in the first game 8-0 before seeing its rally in game two come up short, 3-2. The losses drop ISU to 21-19 overall, 1-7 in the Big 12 while Texas improves to 30-12 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
After falling behind 3-0 in game two, ISU staged a rally via a sacrifice fly by Lexi Slater and a home run by Aly Cappaert. Brittany Gomez had a hit and a stolen base in each game.
Game Two: Texas 3 Iowa State 2
Once again, the Longhorns got on the board in the first inning as Lindsey Stephens powered a two-out triple off the wall in left-center. During Holly Kern's at-bat, Stephens took advantage of a wild pitch by Stacy Roggentien to come across home and give UT the 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns added a pair in the bottom of the second as Devon Tunning fired a line drive off the top of the wall allowing Randel Leahy (who walked) and Stephanie Ceo (who reached on a bunt single) to score and moved Texas ahead 3-0.
The top of the fourth inning finally saw the Iowa State offense function as Brittany Gomez's hit to right ended a 20 at-bat steak extending to the first game of ISU not getting on base. After Gomez stole second, Aly Cappaert got a hit to left that put runners on the corners with one away. That gave Lexi Slater the opportunity to bring home a run on a sac fly to left to reduce the UT advantage to 3-1.
Iowa State got another run back in the top of the sixth as Cappaert fired her sixth home run of the season just over the fence in right-center. It was the 22nd home run of her Iowa State career.
After giving up the three runs in the first two innings, Roggentien settled down and pitch an efficient outing for the Cyclones. In defeat, Roggentien struck out four, walked just two and retired 10 of the final 11 Longhorns she faced.
The Cyclones got one last chance to rally in the seventh as Jorden Spendlove led off the inning with a single. However, there would be nothing more for ISU as a Kelsey McFarland pop up, Hope Scheffert ground out and Gabby Voulgaris strike out saw the end of the line for the Cyclones.
Game One: Texas 8 Iowa State 0 (Five Innings)
Iowa State's best chance to get on the board came right away. Brittany Gomez bunted the first pitch of the game down the third-base line for her 61st hit of the season and 202nd of her career. She then promptly stole second, her 21st steal of the season and 76th of her career. However, she would only get to third as Lexi Slater struck out to end the inning.
UT got right to work as Devon Tunning led off with a walk and was immediately moved over to third on a Maddie Reese throwing error on Stephanie Wong's at-bat. Lindsey Stephens brought home UT's first run via a sacrifice fly to center, making it 1-0 Longhorns.
The Longhorns opened up a big lead in the second as they took advantage of some illegal pitches by Brianna Weilbacher to go with some strong hitting. It became 2-0 UT on a Marlee Gabaldon single and 3-0 on a Weilbacher illegal pitch on Stephanie Ceo's at-bat. ISU brought in Katie Johnson to try and calm things down, but Tunning was able to bring home a pair on a single to left-center to make it 5-0 Longhorns.
The Iowa State offense was stifled by Erica Wright, who retired the final 11 Cyclones she faced, finishing the game with eight strikeouts and allowing just two base runners: Gomez and Maddie Reese, who drew a walk in the second.
In the fifth, UT got the first two on via a Wong hit by pitch and a Stephens single. Holly Kern looked to have grounded out, but the ball went through Slater's legs at short, allowing a run to score and two get into scoring position. Erin Shireman ended the game the next at-bat with a bloop single to left that allowed both runners to score.
