AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State fell in its series finale to Texas 4-1 Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field. The loss dropped ISU to 21-20 on the season, 1-8 in the Big 12, while Texas improved to 31-12 and 6-3 in the league.
Iowa State briefly held the lead as Maddie Reese recorded an RBI-double in the first inning. Stacy Roggentien was strong again in the circle, but some errors behind her in the field set Iowa State back.
Cyclones on the Board First
Brittany Gomez got the Cyclones off the blocks with a walk off Tiara Davis. While Lexi Slater and Aly Cappaert both grounded out, both did enough to advance Gomez all the way to third. That set the stage for Maddie Reese, who took advantage of a drawn in Lindsey Stephens in center and flew one over her and to the wall for the RBI-double and ISU's first lead of the weekend at 1-0.
UT Equalizer
The Longhorns tied it back up in the bottom of the second. Kelli Hanzel drew a walk during an eight-pitch at-bat against Stacy Roggentien. That was followed by Marlee Gabladon being hit by a pitch. It set the stage for Randel Leahy, who fired a shot into the gap in right-center to the wall, allowing Hanzel to come home to tie things up.
However, Roggentien settled down and kept two in scoring position, getting Stephanie Ceo to fly out to short left and Devon Tunning to line one right back to the circle to end the inning and the UT threat.
Texas Takes Advantage of ISU Errors
In the bottom of the fourth, Ceo drew a two-out walk and stole second during Tunning's at-bat. The inning looked over as Reese made a spectacular diving stop on a grounder towards the hole in the right side of the infield, but her flip to first was dropped by Spendlove. Ceo smartly continued to run out the play and scored to move UT ahead 2-1.
That was followed by a double down the leftfield line by Stephanie Wong to put two in scoring position for Stephens. UT's leading scorer, Stephens fired one to right to bring home Tunning, but Kelsey McFarland stepped up with a big throw home, allowing Sammie Hildreth to tag out Wong and keep the UT lead to 3-1.
Gomez Continues Pursuit of History
Brittany Gomez finished the game 1-of-3 at the plate with a single and a stolen base. The Cyclone junior now has 204 career hits to her name, 12 away from tying the Iowa State career record of 216 by Jenny Condon. ISU has 13 games remaining in the 2015 regular season. Gomez, who is on an eight-game hit streak, also recorded her 23rd stolen base of the season and the 78th of her career.
