KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – The Iowa State gymnastics team claimed the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Classic championship Saturday night at the Knoxville Convention Center. Iowa State earned the team title with a 194.200, as ISU recorded the top team scores on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise among the quartet of teams.
The Cyclones finished ahead of second-place Southeast Missouri at 192.550, Pittsburgh at 190.350 and Air Force at 188.850.
“I am happy with how our team rallied after balance beam,” head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We could have easily folded, and called it a night, but we came back very strongly.”
Individually, the Cyclones picked up wins on uneven bars by Hilary Green with a 9.875 and Haylee Young, who recorded the win on beam at 9.825 and was part of a two-way tie for the win on floor exercise with a 9.900.
Floor Exercise
The Cyclones bounced back from a challenging beam effort with its best team score of the season in any event, recording a big 49.200. The Cyclones were led by Haylee Young, who for the fourth time in her career recorded a 9.900 on the floor. The breakthrough performance came from Briana Ledesma, as the sophomore laid down a 9.875, a full one-tenth better than her previous career-high score.
Supporting the team effort was a pair of 9.825s by Kelsey Paz and Meaghan Sievers, both of which tied career-high scores. Sydney Converse rounded out the scoring on floor with a 9.775.
Iowa State assistant coach Kristen Maloney
“We had a lot of improvements from last weekend, and I am pleased with how they did. I look forward to getting better on the little details.”
Uneven Bars
Hilary Green was her usual brilliant self, as Iowa State's star on bars fired off a 9.875 to lead the Cyclones to a 48.800 for the event. Freshman Meaghan Sievers made a big jump from last week at Minnesota, posting a 9.800 this week after going 9.500. The Cyclone effort was bolstered by a pair of 9.725s from Briana Ledesma and Kelsey Paz. While ISU did leave some points on the bars, the Cyclones can leave Knoxville with the satisfaction of having no falls on any of their scoring routines.
Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne
“We showed marked improvement from last week. We still have a distance to cover to get to where we want to be. We showed some flashes of what is yet to come.”
Vault
The Cyclones got a solid effort on the vault, posting a team score of 48.475. Leading the way for Iowa State was Meaghan Sievers, whose big air got her a 9.750. Right behind her for the Cyclones was Briana Ledesma, who recorded a 9.725 and Sydney Converse's 9.700.
Iowa State volunteer assistant coach Danielle Guider
“I was happy they hit their vaults. They are big vaults, but we need to work on our details. The landings are not where they need to be, but we are going to get back into the gym and get those sticks ready for next weekend.”
Balance Beam
The Iowa State effort was hampered by falls, as the Cyclones had three-straight falls en route to posting a 47.725. After the consecutive falls, ISU was able to get a small recovery at the end, as Haylee Young recorded a 9.825 to lead the Iowa State effort, and Alex Marasco closed things out for the Cyclones with a 9.725. Sydney Converse led-off the event with a 9.650.
Iowa State assistant coach Katie Minasola
“Today was not our best beam performance, but we had a few good routines and stuck landings. Overall, we need to focus on hitting routines.”
