AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (11-8, 3-5 Big 12) lost to TCU (12-8, 4-5 Big 12), 72-62 on Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. Freshman Bridget Carleton paced the Cyclones, as she put up 23 points and 11 rebounds in the outing.
How it Happened
The shots weren't falling in the early going, but the Cyclones managed to take a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, as Carleton hit 3-pointer at the buzzer. It was offense-by-committee, with six different ISU players scoring in the opening stanza, and no one putting more than three points on the board. The defense held TCU to just 5-of-16 shooting from the floor and out-rebounded the Horned Frogs, 13-7 in the opening stanza.
It was an up-and-down second quarter for the Cyclones, who got off to a hot start and saw their lead extend as large as five on an Emily Durr 3-pointer midway through the period. The Horned Frogs then proceeded to go on a 17-2 run to take a 38-28 lead at halftime. The Cyclones' only points in the final 4:51 of the half came on free throws from Carleton and Seanna Johnson. Jadda Buckley led the way with seven points in the first half.
Carleton got her offense going in the third quarter, scoring six of the Cyclones' 13 points. However, Iowa State was unable to put a dent in the deficit, as they were never able to cut the lead to less than seven points. Each team scored just 13 points in the low-scoring period, and the Horned Frogs took a 51-41 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The pace picked up in the fourth quarter, but TCU was able to keep the Cyclones at an arm's distance for the majority of the period. The Cyclones eventually cut the lead to as few as six on a 5-0 spurt late in the quarter, but that was as close as it got. Carleton stayed hot through the second half, scoring 12 of her game-high 23 points in the final stanza. Zahna Medley was TCU's top scorer with 22 points on the night.
