AMES, Iowa – No. 8-seeded Iowa State (4-14-2, 2-6-1 Big 12) fell 3-0 to No. 1 Baylor (16-4, 8-1 Big 12) in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Big 12 Soccer Championship at Swope Soccer Village.
Senior Emily Steil, who sent the Cyclones to Kansas City with a game-winning goal in the regular season finale, led Iowa State with three shots on Sunday.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones battled back-and-forth with the nation's No. 10 team for much of the first half, jumping out to a 3-1 lead in shots while getting into the attack well. It was Baylor's first goal late in the opening stanza that turned the tide in favor of the Bears. BU's Jackie Crowther volleyed the ball into the box, where it was collected by Elena Reyna. The freshman forward collected the pass and buried it in the back of the net in the 35th minute.
Momentum stayed on Baylor's side coming out of halftime, as Julie James extended the lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute. A penalty kick converted by Taylor Moon 15 minutes later stretched Baylor's advantage to 3-0.
Coach Speak
"We came out really strong, moved the ball well and got some good opportunities at goal," said head coach Tony Minatta. "It's unfortunate to give up that goal late in the first half. Coming out of halftime, we had an idea of what we wanted to do, but gave up the early goal and were forced to get into a more attacking posture. We had opportunities in the second half and just couldn't close them out. Could not be more proud of the team and the effort they put into this whole experience to get here."
