CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Three Iowa State Cyclones took third place Saturday at the UNI Open. Of the eight Cyclones entered, five placed in the top four of their weight class.
Caleb Fuessley (125), Isaac Judge (165) and Ethan Andersen (285) all finished third. Grant Stotts (165) and Julien Broderson (174) both placed fourth.
Fuessley defeated Illinois' Maximo Renteria 8-7 to finish third. Three Cyclones placed at 165 pounds, led by Judge in third place. Judge had an 8-2 win over Thomas Even to open the day before falling 8-3 to Iowa's Patrick Kennedy. Judge defeated Iowa's Jack McClimon 6-0 and Stotts 2-1 in tie-breaker one to take third. Schmidt defeated McClimon by 11-1 major decision in the fifth-place match.
Broderson lost in the quarterfinals 6-4 to UNI's Pat Schoenfelder before rattling off three-straight victories, including a 16-0 technical fall against Missouri's Ellis Pfleger. Iowa's Brennan Swafford defeated Broderson 8-5 in the third-place match. Franklin had a 13-7 decision over South Dakota State's Roman Rogotzke in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals. After a 7-6 loss to South Dakota State's Bowen McConville in the quarterfinals, Andersen won his final three matches of the day to place third. Andersen advanced to the third place match on back-to-back first-period falls before defeating North Dakota State's Juan Mora 7-3 in the third-place match.
The 13th-ranked Cyclones return to action on Sunday, Dec. 19 against 15th-ranked Purdue. The match will take place in Humboldt, Iowa and will start at 5Â p.m.
