AMES, Iowa – No. 10 Iowa State (7-2, 0-0 Big 12) took the 84-50 win over Jacksonville (5-3, 0-0 ASUN) on Sunday afternoon. ISU shot at 47.5 percent through the game while two guided the Cyclones to victory with 20-point performances.
Ashley Joens now ranks at No. 4 in Big 12 history for career points as she tallied 22, her fourth game this season with 20 or more. Joens is the fifth player in league history to hit the mark of 2,500, now holding 2,545.
Stephanie Soares went out to her third 20-plus point game of the season while coming two rebounds shy of a double-double. Soares also blocked four shots and had a steal in 18 minutes of action. Emily Ryan ended the day with a solid performance of nine points, seven assists and a game-leading three steals.
The Cyclones wrapped up the first half shooting 53.1 percent from the field to hold a 47-22 lead over the Dolphins. Joens scored 12 of her 16 first half points in the second quarter alone. Iowa State went on to seal the win ahead by 34.
How it Happened
Ryan nailed a triple to open Cyclone scoring before Soares gave ISU its first lead of 5-4 with 7:11 to go in the first. The Cyclones began to find offensive rhythm as Nyamer Diew hit another 3-pointer with 3:11 on the clock to put the score at 13-7. Joens kept the scoring run going with two free throws while ISU remained perfect at the charity stripe with seven made. ISU held Jacksonville scoreless for over four minutes to end the first period up 20-7.
The second began with a Joens basket from beyond the arc while ISU pressed on, finding a 20-point lead as the clock hit 7:58. Joens continued to find the basket with her second 3-pointer to enter double figures and officially hold the fourth-most career points in Big 12 history. Iowa State took a 25-point lead into the break.
The second half began with Soares tallying double-figure points. Iowa State continued shooting at nearly 50 percent while stretching its lead to over 30 at the midway point of the third quarter. After three played, the scoreboard read 69-34. ISU finalized the game holding its third opponent of the season to 50 points or less.
Player of the Game
Ashley Joens featured 5-of-8 shooting in the first half and put up 12 points in the second quarter as the Cyclones began to stretch their lead over the Dolphins. Joens performed to her 53rd career double-double and fourth this season with a final stat line of 22 points (6-of-12 shooting), 10 rebounds and three assists.
