DETROIT – Three Iowa State wrestlers picked up wins Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Championships, as they advanced to the second round Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. The second round of the NCAA Championships starts at 6 p.m. (CT) and will be available on ESPN.
David Carr (157), Marcus Coleman (184) and Yonger Bastida (197) all earned wins to open the day. Their victories sent them to the second round, which will be held Thursday evening. Carr's victory was the 1,600th all-time win by a Cyclone at the NCAA Championships.
Top-seeded Carr opened his title defense at 157 pounds with a 21-6 (7:00) technical fall over Northern Iowa's 33rd-seeded Derek Holschlag. Carr led 9-5 after the first period, a period in which he allowed just his third takedown of the season. Carr scored seven points in the second and added five in the third for the technical fall. In the second round, Carr will face 17th-seeded Hunter Willits of Oregon State.
Coleman, a four-time national qualifier, defeated Virginia's 25th-seeded Michael Battista by 10-2 major decision. Coleman led 4-1 after the first period after a pair of takedowns. After a second period takedown, Coleman added a fourth takedown in the third period and a point for riding time for the bonus point victory.
