AMES, Iowa – For the third time in its last five conference matches, Iowa State shut out its foe, blanking Kansas State and earning a 0-0 draw at the Cyclone Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Following a two-match road trip in Utah, the Cyclones (3-6-4, 1-2-2 Big 12) returned to the CSC and earned another point in the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats (3-7-3, 0-4-2 Big 12) earned their second straight draw, as both teams notched their fourth clean sheet of the year.
Three Cyclones were tied for the team lead in shots this afternoon, as Yira Yoggerst, Morgan Furmaniak and Jordyn Herrera all had a trio of attempts. Magdalena Keck was the lone other Cyclone with multiple shots (2) as she placed both on net. Isabella Agrusso, Adelaide Wolfe, Chloe Broughton and Lauren Hernandez played the full 90 minutes in the field. Avery Gillahan had six saves as she earned her seventh career shutout. ISU had seven saves, though, as Ella Zimmerman made a game-saving save in the 55th minute, which kept the game scoreless.
Kansas State's Ryann Reynolds and Riley Baker led all players with four shots on the day, while two other Wildcats had a pair of attempts. Baker placed two of her four shots on target, leading the team. K-State keeper Murphy Sheaff also picked up her fourth clean sheet of the season, collecting four saves along the way.
Iowa State and Kansas State each had 18 shots on the day, while the Wildcats held a distinct 9-3 corner kick edge. ISU collected seven saves while K-State smothered four.
How it Happened
The match started a bit slow, as neither side was willing to commit to offensive runs as each team only had just one shot through 20 minutes of play.
That quickly changed in the 20th minute, as Kansas State rattled off three consecutive shots. Two more stray shots would be all the Wildcats had in the first half (5), as ISU was able to control the flow of the game for the majority of the half.
The Cyclones had a great attempt in the final minutes of the first stanza as time ticked away. Lauren Hernandez took a run just to the edge of the box and launched an arcing shot over the defenders in her way that just cleared the net by a foot.
The two teams would enter the break scoreless, with ISU holding the shot advantage (7-5) while Kansas State held the edge in corners (4-1).
As the second half got underway, both sides found themselves with groups of attempts early in the action. ISU had three opportunities in the 53rd and 54th minutes, with a Yira Yoggerst shot, again, just missing.
Kansas State responded with a string of opportunities of its own, as the Wildcats took three shots in three straight minutes, with two having to be saved by the Cyclones. One of the shots was heroically cleared away by Zimmerman whose heads-up play kept the game knotted at zero.
The two teams would exchange opportunities throughout the rest of the second half, but as the wind picked up, both sides' shots seemed to go awry.
The match would finish in a draw as both sides left the Cyclone Sports Complex with a point.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We created a lot more chances today than we did last week. We created the chances today but just didn't put them away and that's been our Achilles' heel the last couple of games. There're days sometimes where it just doesn't go your way."
