WACO, Texas – The No. 4 Iowa State men's cross country team earned a podium finish at the 2024 Big 12 Championships, finishing third behind No. 2 BYU and No. 1 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones trailed the first-place Cougars by just 21 points.
"Today was a great day to get one last mega effort for our teams before moving to the NCAA Regional meet," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, Jeremy Sudbury.
Iowa State had eight runners finish in the top 25 and four Cyclones earned All-Big 12 honors. Robin Kwemoi Bera posted his third top 5 finish of the season, claiming fourth place in 22:16.64 to earn All-Big 12 status. Said Mechaal became a two-time all-conference honoree with a 10th-place finish. Joash Ruto competed in his first meet for ISU, finishing 13th while Sanele Masondo followed in 14th to round out all-Big 12 honorees.
The Cyclones used pack mentality to claim spots 21-24 and close out team scoring. Gable Sieperda led the group and was followed closely by Devan Kipyego, Tim Sindt and Rodgers Rotich. Silas Winders and Ryan Watts were also finishers in the top 40 for Iowa State.
The effort excited Sudbury, who is looking forward to how the group progresses with longer races on the horizon. "The men ran our best conference meet I've been a part of," stated Sudbury. "It's tough to go head-to-head with BYU and OSU, who are ranked 1-2 in the country and our guys didn't back down. We are confident moving to 10 kilometers and only think we'll be able to improve. No one is safe!"
