PEORIA, Ill. – The No. 4 Iowa State men's cross country team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. All Cyclones earned All-Midwest Region honors finishing in the top 25 individually.
"Discipline and execution sums up the men's day," said director of track & field/cross country Jeremy Sudbury. "Our depth was on full display by being able to rest three athletes from conference that were in our top eight and still have seven All-Region finishers!"
Iowa State packed up at the front from the start as Said Mechaal and Robin Kwemoi Bera both ran with the top seven from the 3K mark to the finish of the race. ISU maintained at least one spot in the top five for the entirety of the race. Kwemoi Bera just edged out Mechaal at the finish line for third place, crossing in 29:09.3 to Mechaal's 29:09.4.
The next pack of Cyclones were led by senior Gable Sieperda, who eventually finished 11th in 29:26.5. Sieperda, now a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier, was followed closely by Sanele Masondo (13th, 29:30.4), a 2023 All-American, and Silas Winders (15th, 29:42.9) to round out ISU's top five individuals.
"They Cyclones are catching momentum heading into the final next week in Madison," Sudbury stated, encouraging Iowa State fans to not miss the opportunity to watch one of the nation's top squads compete for a national championship. "If you can make the drive, we'd love to have Cyclone Nation pack the course on Saturday!"
