AMES, Iowa – For the first time since 2016, Iowa State dropped a home contest to Iowa, losing 3-0 in front of 1,433 fans – the sixth-largest attendance in program history.
The Hawkeyes earned their first two points in the 2024-25 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Sunday, bringing the running tally to 5-2 in favor of Iowa State who has wins in both football and volleyball.
The Cyclones (3-4-2, 1-0 Big 12) couldn't pull the top-25 upset despite a career day from keeper Avery Gillahan. Iowa (6-0-2, 1-0 Big Ten) was able to avoid its first loss of the season in convincing fashion, as three Hawkeyes tallied scores.
Gillahan had a career-high 12 saves on the day, shattering her previous best of eight. Both Magdalena Keck and Yira Yoggerst registered shots, while Lauren Hernandez, Chloe Broughton, and Ella Zimmerman played the full 90 minutes in the field.
Both Berit Parten and Madison Wilson had seven shots for the Hawkeyes, tying for a game-high. Parten, as well as Meike Ingles and Maya Hansen, had scores on the day for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa held a 29-2 shot advantage and placed 15 of its shots on goal. The Cyclones had all 12 saves in the game, as Iowa keeper Macy Enneking didn't register a save but earned her sixth-straight clean sheet. The Hawkeyes held an 8-1 corner advantage while both teams had 16 fouls.
How it Happened
Iowa dominated the tempo and control in the first half of play, pushing and making attempts frequently. Of Iowa's 29 shots, 20 came in the first half of play, where the Hawkeyes outshot the Cyclones 20-0 with a pair of goals to show for it.
The second half was a much better outing for the Cyclones, who settled down out of the break and had some great opportunities. The Cyclones registered both shots in the second stanza, and were close to earning a penalty kick, but an official would rule the foul occurred just outside of the box.
Four yellow cards were distributed on the day, with three coming in the second half, as some tempers started to rise on both sides. Yoggerst had the team's best shot to score in the 56th minute, as a feed from Nicolasa Jacobs fell right in front of the net, but a contest from Enneking would force Yoggerst's shot wide.
Fannon's Thoughts
"I think the way we fought in the second half …I think the way we got back into it was very difficult. When you're in a space where you know you're not playing well, making it right is hard, and I thought we did a really great job of that today. I think at the end of the day, if we can be a little bit more clinical and a little bit more selfless, getting ourselves in and around the penalty area, then it'll make a difference."
