VIRGINIA DUALS PRIMER: ISU vs. Rider & Bucknell

AMES, Iowa - No. 13 Iowa State continues its eastern road trip with its first appearance at the Virginia Duals since 2018. Fresh off a victory at No. 22 West Virginia on Wednesday, the Cyclones will look up to complete the road trip against Rider and Bucknell Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (CT), respectively.

Saturday marks Iowa State's first appearance at the Virginia Duals since the 2017-18 season. The Cyclones went 4-1 at that rendition of the duals with victories over Virginia, Old Dominion, Lock Haven and Fresno State and a loss to Arizona State.

ISU and Rider meet for just the fifth time in program history and the first time since the 2018-19 season when the Cyclones won in Lawrenceville, N.J. by a score of 29-17. Iowa State won seven of 10 bouts in that dual, including five by bonus-point margin.

Iowa State and Bucknell meet for the third time ever and the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Cyclones won that matchup 24-15 in Ames and were victorious in six of the 10 bouts.

DRESSER RETURNS TO VIRGINIA
Iowa State is set to make its second appearance at the Virginia Duals under head coach Kevin Dresser. With nearly 30 years of coaching experience in Virginia, Dresser is considered among wrestling royalty in the state.

The Cyclone skipper coached at Grundy HS (1988-96) and Christiansburg HS (1996-2006) before taking over as the head man at Virginia Tech (2006-17). His high school teams combined to win 13 Virginia state titles under his direction (Grundy - 8; Christiansburg - 5). At Virginia Tech, Dresser was a four-time ACC Coach of the Year and won two conference titles.

KEY STORYLINES

Last time out, ISU defeated No. 22 West Virginia, 24-18, in Morgantown. Bonus points were the difference in the contest as the teams split the 10 bouts.
Iowa State's dual lineup is still a work in progress. Paniro Johnson (149), Aiden Riggins (165) and MJ Gaitan (174) all made their season debuts at new weight classes on Wednesday against the Mountaineers.
Johnson secured the first pin of his career against a Division I opponent against West Virginia. He now has dual victories at 149, 157 and 165 pounds this season.
Cyclone 157-pounder Cody Chittum has won five matches in a row and is 8-1 on the season. Included in the winning streak is a victory over Ohio State's No. 7 Paddy Gallagher at the Collegiate Duals.
Kevin Dresser preaches a high-paced, entertaining style of wrestling and encourages his athletes to give fans their money's worth. This season, nearly half of Cyclone wrestlers' wins have come with bonus points (35-of-72, 48.8%).
