AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (12-2, 2-1 Big 12) topped Texas Tech (8-7, 0-3 Big 12) in four sets to open Big 12 play at home. Set scores on the night were 25-18, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18.
A trio of Cyclones put up double-doubles in the victory. Nayeli Ti'a and Alea Goolsby both had theirs with kills and digs, with Ti'a having 16 kills and 17 digs and Goolsby 15 kills and 11 digs. Ava Martin had a double-double of the assist-dig variety with 11 assists and 10 digs. Goolsby had her seventh match in a row with 10 or more kills, and totals 10 double-figure kill matches through the first 14 matches.
Pam McCune was magnificent with an errorless 11 kills on 18 swings. Her hitting percentage of .611 is just off the ISU single-match top 10.
Rachel Van Gorp put up match No. 19 in a row with 10 or more digs, totaling 18 while serving an ace and assisting on six kills.
Reagan Hanfelt saw her first action as a Cyclone, and made it memorable with an errorless seven kills on just 10 swings, four total blocks (2 solo, 2 assisted), four assists, a dig and an ace.
SET ONE
Hanfelt, a freshman making her first start, put down an ace on her first trip to the service line making it 4-1, ISU. A 4-0 run brought it to a 15-7 lead as TI'a served, and the Cyclones kept the lead until the end. Van Gorp tallied ISU's fifth ace as ISU reached 20 points (20-15) and ISU would win the set 25-18.
SET TWO
The second began evenly in the early goings, but TTU followed to take a lead of 12-8. ISU answered with two kills, an ace and a block to then knot the score. ISU would take the lead back at 15-14 on a Tierney Jackson kill while TTU had its own lead flip deep in the set at 22-21. The Red Raiders hit set point at 24-23, but ISU did not back down taking the next three for the set at 26-24.
SET THREE
Texas Tech began ahead 8-4 as Iowa State called the early timeout. A McCune kill halted TTU's scoring spree, and Ti'a followed with another. TTU remained with the lead as Iowa State could not find offensive rhythm to extend the match.
SET FOUR
McCune had her ninth kill on 13 swings (.692 hitting), putting the scoreboard at 5-5. After back-to-back Goolsby kills and a block from Hanfelt ISU took a narrow lead at 13-11. Iowa State won a tough rally to ignite the crowd and make it 17-14 after tough saves and a block by McCune. ISU ended the match on a run of five to seal the victory at 25-18.
