LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 1 Iowa State men's cross country team earned its ninth Top 3 team finish at the Big 12 Championships in the last 10 seasons with five Cyclones earning All-Big 12 honors. Robin Kwemoi Bera, Joash Ruto and Sanele Masondo were repeat honorees while Rodgers Kiplimo and Meshack Kimutai earned their first All-Conference recognition.
"I was proud of the effort our men put forth today especially after having a long training block," said Director of Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury. " This ended up being a great opportunity to see where we are at before moving to the 10K distance."
The Cyclones packed the Top 25 throughout the first mile of the race with their top five runners running within 1.7 seconds of each other. At the 3K mark, ISU ran even closer together, with its 1-5 runners within one second of each other and all in the Top 20 to hold the top team spot with a slight edge over No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Colorado. By the 5K, Joash Ruto led the field, but Oklahoma State had three runners in the Top 6 to take over the slight lead with 43 points to Iowa State's 46. With 1K to go, 10 combined runners from Iowa State and Oklahoma State made up the Top 13 in the field, but the Cowboys held onto five of the first seven finishes to take the team title.
"OSU executed very well and had our number today, but we are looking forward to squaring off again with them over the next three weeks," said Sudbury. "Round 1, OSU, but the fight is still on."
The runner-up finish at the Conference meet marks the 10th time in program history the Cyclones have finished second and the fourth time as the runners-up under Sudbury's direction.
Kwemoi Bera and Ruto were Top 5 individual finishers for Iowa State while Kiplimo, Masondo and Kimutai finished 10th, 12th and 13th, respectively. Devan Kipyego (28th), Allen Bonnesen (38th) and Quinton Orr (55th) were also finishers for the Cyclones.
"My biggest take away for both groups is that our goals are firmly still intact and the focus now is on how we can manage the next three weeks in preparation for the Show!"
