SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 16 Iowa State (3-0) flexed its defensive muscles Monday evening, forcing a season-high 26 turnovers, as it dominated Mississippi State (1-1) and handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, winning 96-80.
ISU's 26 turnovers forced are the sixth-most of the T.J. Otzelberger era. Prior to Otz's arrival, ISU had eight games of 25-plus turnovers forced since 1996-97. Since Otzelberger arrived in 2021-22, ISU has eight such contests. ISU has now forced 18-plus turnovers in three straight contests for the first time since 2023 (FAMU, PVAMU, Iowa). Mississippi State's 26 turnovers are tied for the most in program history, as it was just the second time under Coach Chris Jans that the team had 20 or more TO.
In Otzelberger's first game in South Dakota since his time as the SDSU head coach, ISU ran away from the Bulldogs late in the first half before breaking things wide open in the second, leading by as many as 25.
Tamin Lipsey's career-high 25 points were tied for a game-high, as he powered the Cyclones to a 16-point win over their first Power 5 opponent of the season. Lipsey chipped in game-highs in both steals (3) and assists (6) as he did it all for ISU. Joshua Jefferson battled first-half foul trouble but finished with 18 points, four boards, and four assists. Blake Buchanan (13) and Dominick Nelson (11) rounded out the double-figure scorers for ISU, with Buchanan tying for a game-high three blocks.
Mississippi State star guard Josh Hubbard didn't disappoint, as the standout matched Lipsey's 25 with 25 of his own with a team-high five dimes. Shawn Jones Jr. finished with 11, while Brandon Walker had 10 to round out MSU's top scorers. Achor Achor pulled down a game-high eight boards as the Bulldogs had the best shooting performance of any ISU team it's played this season.
How it Happened
Both teams traded blows early as each side was bringing the physicality to its first big-time game of the season. Eight lead changes in the first ten minutes of action set the stage for what looked to be a back-and-forth battle all night before the Cyclones started to buckle down on defense.
Trailing 16-15 with 9:54 to go in the stanza, ISU closed the first period on a 38-19 run over the final ten minutes to open things up and go into the break holding a 53-35 point advantage.
At the break, Lipsey led all Cyclones with 11 points. ISU had forced 15 turnovers to that point, converting them into 18 points. ISU shot 52.8 percent in the first half to fuel its torrid start.
The second half began how the first half ended, with the Cyclones continuing to find their stride both on offense and defense. ISU would go on to lead by as many as 25 with a little under eight minutes remaining before going on to win by 16.
Both Lipsey and Jefferson had 14 second-half points to pace the team. ISU shot 50 percent in the second half, finishing the game with a total field goal percentage of 51.4 percent.
Key Performer
Tamin Lipsey was a man possessed, as he dropped a career-high 25 points. Lipsey did it all for the Cyclones, as he outdueled fellow Bob Cousy Award Watchlist member Josh Hubbard. Lipsey finished with a game-high 25 points, six assists and three steals.
